Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American artist and rapper. Her work as Queen Latifah in television, film and music has won her several accolades. These include an Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Additional Grammy Nominations An Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, as well as Rita who was a educator at Irvington High School. Her parents divorced around the age of ten. Latifah lived within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah means gentle and very gentle. The name was given by her cousin to her at the age of aged eight. Always tall, at 5'10, Latifah was a forward on her basketball team in high school. The song she sang was"Home" from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah began her career as a beatboxer with The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was among the founding members of the model of the Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to the host of Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the track. The singer signed Latifah and then released her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
